Wild Sakura Leaf Tea Organic

Tea Farm

On our tea farm in the mountainous hinterlands of Shizuoka, the cherry blossom trees are handled only with the utmost care. As a certified organic farm, the use of artificial pesticides is strictly avoided, and harvesting is done entirely by hand. The tea is made from the particularly early-blooming Oshima cultivar, which is especially popular in the area around the Izu Peninsula, southwest of Tokyo.

Character & Aroma

Tasting Notes

A sense of springtime bliss arises upon encountering the incomparably sweet aroma of the Japanese cherry blossom. Gently processed as a semi-fermented oolong tea, this flavour is comes to life, capturing the essence of the Japanese spring with its vibrant, aromatic bouquet. The aroma carries notes of almond and dark, ripe cherries, whereby the drinking sensation is characterised by a wonderful softness and clarity. A slightly tart undertone in the background adds a touch of depth to the tea. Anyone who has tasted authentic Japanese sakura mochi will instantly recognise the distinctive flavour of the Japanese cherry blossom here.

Cherry Tree Leaves

The use of sakura leaves dates back to the Edo period when merchants wrapped their mochi rice cakes in salted, pickled sakura leaves and sold them. People quickly fell in love with the cherry tree’s uniquely delicate flavour. Today, in addition to the ever-popular sakura mochi, there is a wide variety of sakura-infused foods: from flavoured salt, ice cream, and jam to soba noodles, tea, and wine. The creativity of farmers and local producers knows no bounds.

Yoshien Labortests

Laboratory Tests

We go to great lengths to identify the finest organic tea farms across the world’s most celebrated terroirs. All our teas are sourced directly from the farmer and, with a few exceptions, are certified organic or come from pesticide-free farms. Each batch of tea for every harvest is tested for pesticides and other pollutants in an independent German lab to ensure they meet our strict quality standards as well as HACCP food safety requirements. Likewise, all the regions of Japan from which we source our teas are tested for radioactivity for every harvest.

Cultivation & Processing

Special features in location, cultivation and processing

The tea farm is located in Shimada, nestled in the mountainous hinterlands of Shizuoka. The region greatly benefits from the Ōigawa River, providing abundant fresh mountain water and mist that nourishes the plants throughout the year. Since 2023, the farm has been officially certified organic in both Japan and the EU.

Preparation

Brewing Guide

1 teaspoon (2-3 leaves), 100C°, steep for 3-5 Min

Packaging & Storage

Packed in a particularly high-quality, airtight, BPA-free flavour-protecting bag with a zipper. When closing the bag, press out as much air as possible to keep the tea fresh. Alternatively, and especially for longer-term storage, we recommend our stylish and airtight tea caddies.

Recommended Tea Pot

A classic teapot made of glass or porcelain is ideal. For enthusiasts of Chinese tea preparation, a Gaiwan can also be recommended for this sakura tea, for brewing in small, rich servings.

Test results

We find it very important that our teas are pure and produced in a way that respects the environment. For this reason, each one of our teas is tested for pesticide residues by an independent laboratory, the results of which can be found here. Some of our teas are also tested for specific nutritional compounds, in which case the test results are also published here.
