Sumi Black 墨絵
The tea caddy was custom-lacquered for us in the shade sumi black. Sumi (墨絵) refers to a form of Chinese or Japanese ink painting, which uses only black ink made from soot, and which is historically linked to zen Buddhism. Often a landscape is sketched in only a few strokes. The art lies in the bigger picture, which is created through sweeping brushwork.
