Rooibos

The rooibos plant belongs to the legume family and is native to the mountainous regions of South Africa’s Western Cape province. To produce red rooibos tea, the shrub is carefully pruned by hand near the ground to harvest the fresh twigs. After harvesting, the twigs are mechanically cut, rolled, and moistened with water to initiate fermentation. This process not only gives the tea its characteristic reddish-brown color but also develops its naturally sweet aroma and flavonoids. Once fermented, the rooibos is sun-dried to halt fermentation, then sorted, steamed, and dried to perfection.

Laboratory Tests

We go to great lengths to identify the finest organic tea farms across the world’s most celebrated terroirs. All our teas are sourced directly from the farmer and, with a few exceptions, are certified organic or come from pesticide-free farms. Each batch of tea for every harvest is tested for pesticides and other pollutants in an independent German lab to ensure they meet our strict quality standards as well as HACCP food safety requirements.

Cultivation & Processing

Rooibos

To ensure even and healthy growth, Rooibos bushes are first cultivated in small seedbeds. This process takes place in the late South African summer, from February to March. The seeds are first mechanically processed to achieve a particularly high germination rate. The following autumn, the seedlings are carefully harvested by hand and transplanted into the fields of the Cederberg region. This is followed by an 18-month growth phase before the first harvest can take place. During harvesting, the shrubs are manually cut approximately 40 cm above the ground, allowing the plant to continue growing and produce up to four additional harvests.

Single Origin

This tea comes 100% from the Cederberg mountains. Sourced directly from the tea farmer.
