Tea Farm

All our herbs are sourced from world-leading tea cultivation regions and from small, regional tea farms, some of which have existed as family businesses for generations. The farms are located in remote, natural regions and are well protected from pesticide drift and pollution from nearby cities. Our partner farms in Austria and Italy are among the pioneers of sustainable agriculture. The bancha kari leaves are sourced directly from their native country of Japan, which offers optimal growing conditions for the plant, allowing for the formation of effective phyotchemicals.

The bancha kari leaves and fermented Sakura flowers are specially grown for us. The other herbs used in this tea are cultivated on small mountain herb farms in the Austrian foothills of the Alps, where they thrive in their native environment.

Character

Flavour

Pleasantly fruity, palatable aroma with tart, smoky, herbaceous and spicy notes.

Laboratory Tests

We go to great lengths to identify the finest organic tea farms across the world’s most celebrated terroirs. All our teas are sourced directly from the farmer and, with a few exceptions, are certified organic or come from pesticide-free farms. Each batch of tea for every harvest is tested for pesticides and other pollutants in an independent German lab to ensure they meet our strict quality standards as well as HACCP food safety requirements.

Contents

Herbal infusion with horsetail for beneficial activation, plus nettle, bancha kari tea leaves, birch leaves, dandelion root, sweet clover, burdock root, walnut leaves, mullein flower, fermented sakura leaves and marigold petals.

Birch Leaves

The silver birch (Betula pedula) tree belongs to the birch family (Betulaceae). There are about 40 species of birch, which are distributed across Central Europe, Asia and America. The most common at our latitudes is the silver birch, which stands out due to its black and white bark. Both the leaves and the bark of the tree have a long tradition of internal and external use.

Horsetail

Horsetail (Equisetum arvense) has been used since ancient times as a natural remedy and contains a whole range of valuable phytochemicals.

Nettle

Although stinging nettle was for a long time an overlooked medicinal herb, it is increasingly enjoying scientific interest.

Bancha Kari Leaves

Bancha is a pillar of the Japanese green tea tradition and is traditionally made from the coarser leaves of later harvests, with premium banchas made from leaves of the early intermediate harvest (meban). The tea is very mild, with an alkaline-mineral quality. It is rich in macrobiotics and ideal for the evening.

Dandelion

The dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) has also been used in herbalism since ancient times. Valuable ingredients are found in almost all parts of the plant, but are present in the highest concentration in the roots.

Burdock Root

Greater burdock (Arctium lappa L.) is a plant of the Asteraceae family and is characterised by its peculiar red or purple flowers and their spike-like bracts. Its roots are long and spindle-shaped. The plant is native to Europe, North America and northern Asia and grows mainly along roadsides. It was a sought-after natural remedy among the ancient Greeks and existed in the herb garden of Hildegard von Bingen and Kneipp.

Sweet Clover

Sweet clover (Melilotus officinalis) is a plant which grows mainly in Europe and Asia, which belongs to the legume family. The herb, which has a sweet fragrance, is used in European herbalism both internally as a tea and externally in the form of compresses.

Walnut Leaves

The leaves as well as the nuts of the walnut (Juglandaceae) have a rich flavour and are used in many teas.

Mullein Flower

Mullein flower (Verbasci flos) belongs to the Scropulariaeae family. It can reach heights of up to 2 meters tall and usually bears torch-like yellow inflorescences. In medieval times, the plant was dipped in tar and used as a torch. Hildegard von Bingen also combined the flowers with fennel. Today, the plant still enjoys great popularity and has been included by ESCOP and HMPC in their monographs.

Fermented Sakura Leaves

Sakura leaves are the leaves of the Japanese cherry (sakura) tree. The cherry tree is an important symbol of Japanese culture and represents not only beauty, but also transience. They have an intense, fruity aroma.

Marigold Petals

The marigold (Calendula officinalis) belongs to the daisy (Asteraceae) family, and is widespread in Europe. With its yellow and orange flowers, it is particularly striking and can be found in many gardens. The petals, when dried, can be used as a tea or in the form of an extract for external use.

Cultivation & Processing

All ingredients are grown using natural methods and without the use of pesticides and synthetic fertilisers.

Austrian Herbs

The Austrian herbs are grown at an elevation of around 500–900m on rolling hills, far from factories and busy traffic. The herbs have been thriving here under traditional cultivation methods since the 13th century. The high-quality plants grow naturally in small fields, completely without the use of chemicals.

Because of the excellent climatic conditions in the region, irrigation is not necessary. The plants are harvested partly by hand and partly with specialised machines. Within 1–2 hours after harvesting, the herbs are gently dried in a tray dryer at a maximum temperature of 40°C, for about 12–24 hours. After that, they are crushed and packaged. No fumigation or other questionable processes are used.

Climatically, Austria offers optimal growing conditions for the plants. The mild summers and cool nights as well as the harsh winters, high humidity and rainfall throughout the year all contribute to the quality of the plants. The careful selection of the plants, the favourable location on granite subsoil, the gentle processing methods and strict quality guidelines also enhance the quality of the plants. As a result, the plants achieve a high concentration of important ingredients and flavours, including essential oils and secondary phytochemicals.

Italian Herbs

Our partner farms in Tuscany have made history as pioneers of dynamic and sustainable farming in Italy. The farms uniquely combine conventional fields with wooded areas and natural meadows for the wild growth of naturally occurring herbs. The unique cultivation practices and careful and gentle processing methods can in many cases only be followed by hand. Many years of knowledge about the requirements of the plants and optimal harvesting times for active ingredient content result in particularly potent herbs with strong aromas.

Japanese Herbs

The Chiran region is located in Kagoshima, the southernmost part of Japan. The tea field is located on flat terrain near the sea, and receives significant sun exposure. The generations old family farm has been cultivating tea according to organic and holistic methods for 20 years.

Our fermented sakura leaves are also grown strictly without pesticides.
