Orchid Black Tea

Character & Aroma

Tasting Notes

The dry leaves release a complex aroma in the pre-warmed teapot, marked by a distinct fruitiness. Notes of dried fruit and floral accents blend with a light sweetness reminiscent of wine gums. Over time, more robust, malty undertones come to the fore, adding depth to the fragrance.

With the first infusion, the tea reveals a noticeably full-bodied aroma, as the floral and sweet notes of the dry leaves give way to a more classic malty black tea character. On the palate, the tea surprises with a pronounced sweetness. Floral orchid sweetness takes the lead, while the astringency typical of black tea remains very subtle, providing balance in the background. The flavour is clear, restrained, and pleasantly easy to drink. In the second infusion, the tea gains body and presents a slightly heavier, more substantial structure. The sweetness remains, but with greater depth.

All in all, a wonderfully balanced aromatic tea to suit all tastes.

Orchid Black Tea

Orchid Tea

Similar to jasmine tea, the traditional scenting of orchid tea involves carefully layering freshly picked blossoms with the tea leaves. The flowers are usually placed in several layers between the tea leaves, allowing the essential oils and characteristic aroma to transfer naturally. This process can be repeated over several days, depending on the desired intensity of fragrance, with fresh blossoms added each time. Afterwards, the flowers are removed and the tea retains their pure, natural aroma – without the need for artificial additives.

A key difference between jasmine and orchid tea lies in the intensity and character of their fragrance. While jasmine blossoms impart a strong, sweet, and intense aroma, the scent of orchid is often more refined, elegant, and subtle. This makes orchid tea particularly well-suited to teas with complex flavour profiles, such as white or black tea, as the scenting gently enhances rather than overpowers them.

Yoshien Labortests

Laboratory Tests

We go to great lengths to identify the finest organic tea farms across the world’s most celebrated terroirs. All our teas are sourced directly from the farmer and, with a few exceptions, are certified organic or come from pesticide-free farms. Each batch of tea for every harvest is tested for pesticides and other pollutants in an independent German lab to ensure they meet our strict quality standards as well as HACCP food safety requirements. Likewise, the regions of Japan from which we source our teas are tested for radioactivity for every harvest.

Cultivation & Processing

Special features in location, cultivation and processing

The tea farm is located in a remote area near the village of Fuliang in the northeast of Jiangxi Province. Renowned tea-growing regions such as the famous Qi Men (Keemun) are close by. The area’s excellent natural conditions and particularly humus-rich soil provide ideal growing conditions. This is reflected especially in the tea’s full-bodied aroma, its exceptionally pure and natural taste, and an above-average content of amino acids.

Single Origin

This tea comes 100% from the above-mentioned tea field in Jiangxi, China, sourced directly from the farm.

Preparation

Brewing Guide

2 rounded tsp per 200-300ml water, 80°C, steep for 2 min. Suitable for several infusions.

Packaging & Storage

Packed in a premium-quality, airtight flavour-protecting pouch with zipper and stand-up base. Thanks to a 9-layer coating, the tea is optimally protected from oxidation and external contaminants. When closing the pouch, press out as much air as possible to preserve the tea’s freshness. Alternatively, and especially for long-term storage, we recommend our stylish, airtight tea caddies.

Recommended Tea Pot

For preparation, we recommend using porcelain teaware, as it beautifully brings out the delicate orchid fragrance. The tea is particularly well-suited to brewing in a Gaiwan, but porcelain teapots also produce a wonderfully aromatic cup of tea. Alternatively, a glass teapot can be used, allowing you to watch the tea infuse as it steeps.
