This mountain tea comes from Mount Olympus, famous as the home of the gods of Greek mythology, and is perhaps the best mountain tea in Greece. It is wild-grown directly on mountain slope meadows, using knowledge that has been passed down through generations of farmers. The tea has a highly aromatic, lemony aroma that is reminiscent of Greek conifer and pine. The flavour is soft and rounded with an alkaline character. The tea is deep and robust

Mountain Tea (Sideritis)

The mountain tea Sideritis scardica is endemic to the mountains of the Balkan peninsula (Bulgaria, Greece, Albania). Shephards have consumed this tea for centuries while traveling with their herds. Depending on the terroir, mountain, and elevation, the mountain tea plant can develop a different array of compounds which affect aroma and flavour. The best mountain teas are grown wild at over 1,200m elevation. Premium mountain teas are made from the upper stems of the plants with thick flowers that are hand-harvested and air-dried.

Laboratory Tests

We go to great lengths to identify the finest organic tea farms across the world’s most celebrated terroirs. All our teas are sourced directly from the farmer and, with a few exceptions, are certified organic or come from pesticide-free farms. Each batch of tea for every harvest is tested for pesticides and other pollutants in an independent German lab to ensure they meet our strict quality standards as well as HACCP food safety requirements.

Cultivation & Processing

Mountain tea Sideritis Scardica is endemic to the mountains of the Balkan Peninsula (Bulgaria, Greece, Albania). Depending on the terroir / mountain and altitude, the plant forms different ingredients and aromas. It is so deeply rooted in Greek culture that it is also commonly referred to as Greek mountain tea. For centuries, shepherds have been drinking this tea when traveling with their flocks. One of the most famous terroirs in Greece for this tea are the slopes of Mount Olympus in the mountain range of the same name, where it grows in its natural habitat at an altitude of about 1100 meters in the best location. For the tea, only the native seeds of the wild mountain tea of the area are sown on the mountain meadows. The plants then grow on their own without further processing and are influenced only by the picturesque and beautiful nature. In June, at the flowering stage, the tea is finally harvested by hand when the plants have the highest content of polyphenols. Only the upper juicy stems and the full umbels with spikes are carefully selected. Then these are dried in the most gentle way in the air, hanging in the shade, and then packaged for us.

Single Origin

This tea comes 100% from the above mountain meadows on Mt. Olympus, direct purchase from the tea farmer.

Brewing Guide

Crush 2-3 twigs with stems and umbels, add to 300-400ml water, infuse for 10 minutes (the tea tastes especially good with honey, or a few drops of lemon). For a stronger tea (stronger and more bitter), as above, but with 500ml water, simmer for 3 minutes and infuse for another 5-10 minutes.
