Tea Farm

The certified organic Seeyok Estate was established in 1869 and is located in the Mirik Valley at the foot of the Himalayas. This prestigious tea garden sits at 1,000-1,800m above sea level, an elevation higher than most tea gardens in the region. At the border between India and Nepal, the tea garden lies in the shadow of the Kanchenjunga Mountain with a view of the Rongbong Valley. The northeast-facing slopes benefit from high rainfall and a cool microclimate that is responsible for the characteristically robust flavour of the tea. The tea is processed according to strictly observed quality standards.

Character

Flavour

A wonderfully balanced and refreshing version of the classic Earl Grey. Exquisite orange aroma perfectly complements the floral notes of the first flush Darjeeling. The citrus fragrance of orange and bergamot oils accompany a full-bodied flavour and soft texture that delights the senses. The tea is overall characterised by a sweet and fruity taste.

Black Tea

Black tea is the most oxidised form of tea. In contrast to green tea, the oxidation of the leaves after harvest and withering is not stopped with heat, but rather further facilitated by intensive rolling of the leaves, which breaks open cell walls and exposes the enzymes responsible for oxidation. Over the course of this process the leaves change from green to black and a full-bodied and broad aroma develops. The cup is often orange or red, which is where the Chinese name for this tea (hong cha, meaning "red tea") comes from.

Laboratory Tests

We go to great lengths to identify the finest organic tea farms across the world’s most celebrated terroirs. All our teas are sourced directly from the farmer and, with a few exceptions, are certified organic or come from pesticide-free farms. Each batch of tea for every harvest is tested for pesticides and other pollutants in an independent German lab to ensure they meet our strict quality standards as well as HACCP food safety requirements.

Preparation

Brewing Guide

2–3g per 100–300ml water (75°C). Steep for 2–3 minutes.

Packaging

High-quality, airtight, resealable standing zipper pouch with 9 protective layers to preserve flavour and protect against oxidation and contamination.

Recommended Teapot

For an especially aromatic and traditional-tasting Earl Grey, we recommend an elegant glass teapot from Hario or, alternatively, a classic porcelain teapot.

Recommended Storage

A high-quality tea caddy made of cherry bark (solid wood, kabazaiku chazutsu) is ideal, though any airtight tea caddy with internal coating will suffice.
