Saji are Japanese teaspoons for portioning tea leaves, mostly made of either wood or metal. They are shaped in such a way that the tea leaves can easily be measured and transferred from the container to the teapot. The saji can be stored conveniently alongside the tea leaves in a tea caddy.

Made from the wood of the Chinese coffin tree (Machilus nanmu) which is fragrant, resistant and highly valuable. The tree is famous in Chinese architecture and was used, among other things, for the supporting columns of the Forbidden City in Beijing.
