Tea Farm

Guranse Estate

The farm is run with great social commitment, offering many education and training programmes for its employees and their children. It has always relied on natural tea cultivation, using no chemical pesticides or artificial fertilisers.

Character & Aroma

Tasting Notes

This delightfully fruity Spring Flush tea, made from pure tips (tea buds), can be enjoyed like a classic Darjeeling Afternoon Tea. It is creamy, smooth, and well-rounded, with notes of hazelnut and pear, and a lovely sweetness reminiscent of white teas. It can easily be infused a second time.

Leaf

Green-white, fragrant, finely twisted leaves

Cup

Pale yellow-green

BLACK TEA

Black tea is the most oxidised form of tea. In contrast to green tea, the oxidation of the leaves after harvest and withering is not stopped with heat, but rather further facilitated by intensive rolling of the leaves, which breaks open cell walls and exposes the enzymes responsible for oxidation. Over the course of this process the leaves change from green to black and a full-bodied and broad aroma develops. The cup is often orange or red, which is where the Chinese name for this tea (hong cha, meaning "red tea") comes from.

Laboratory Tests

We go to great lengths to identify the finest organic tea farms across the world’s most celebrated terroirs. All our teas are sourced directly from the farmer and, with a few exceptions, are certified organic or come from pesticide-free farms. Each batch of tea for every harvest is tested for pesticides and other pollutants in an independent German lab to ensure they meet our strict quality standards as well as HACCP food safety requirements. Likewise, the regions of Japan from which we source our teas are tested for radioactivity for every harvest.

Cultivation & Processing

Special features in location, cultivation and processing

The Guranse Estate is one of the highest tea gardens in the world. In the highlands of the Hile region in Dhankuta Province, eastern Nepal, the altitude creates an ideal, stimulating climate with significant temperature differences between day and night. The occasionally high rainfall is balanced by excellent drainage on the slopes.

Single Origin

This tea comes 100% from the above-mentioned tea estate in Hile, Nepal, sourced directly from the farm.

Preparation

Brewing Guide

2 rounded teaspoons per 200-300ml water, 80-85°C, steep for 2 minutes.

Packaging

Packed in a high-quality, airtight, BPA-free resealable zipper pouch to preserve flavour and prevent oxidation. After opening, press out as much air as possible when snapping shut.

Recommended Tea Pot

For preparation, a neutral teapot made of porcelain or a glass teapot with an integrated strainer is recommended, allowing the tea to float freely and infuse. A Gaiwan is also very well suited for this tea.

Recommended Tea Caddy

The ideal choice is a high-quality tea caddy made of cherry bark (solid wood, Kabazaiku Chazutsu). Alternatively, a more affordable, internally coated, airtight tea caddy is also a great choice.
