Terroirs Japan
An overview of the most relevant prefectures and their top growing areas (terroir) for Japanese tea with centuries-old tea culture. Each terroir bears witness to unique characteristics of the surrounding nature and thus determines the taste, aroma and processing of the teas.
Aichi Tea
Our tea assortment includes high-quality, pleasantly mild organic Sencha, flavour-intensive fine Matcha and also Tencha from Aichi from the multi-award-winning Mr. Ishikawa. East of Ise Bay on the Japanese Pacific coast of the main island of Honshū lies the prefecture of Aichi, which specialises in particular in the production of Tencha, the fully shaded, pre-processed green tea used to make authentic Matcha. Among tea lovers, Aichi is also known as the origin of much appreciated Tokoname Kyūsu and other tea ceramics.
Chiran Tea
The warm and sunny Chiran of Kagoshima Prefecture is known for its large number of southern tea cultivars, which are excellently adapted to the average warmer temperatures and thus combine a strong character and lovely fresh flavours.
Fukuoka Tea
In the tea world, the Yame region in Fukuoka is considered the ultimate. Our unique repertoire of Yame teas is made up of green tea specialities from the famous village of Hoshino and its neighbouring village of Ukiha, offering characterful sencha, traditional gyokuro, exquisite matcha and rare Japanese black teas. Fukuoka Prefecture is located in northern Kyūshūs, the southernmost of Japan's four main islands. The city of the same name has always functioned as a hub to the Asian mainland and is characterised by strong Korean influences, with the unique street food culture worth mentioning.

Kagoshima Tea
Kagoshima teas consistently shine with strong aroma, natural flavour and also offer the very first shincha of the season every year. Kagoshima Prefecture, with its top regions such as Chiran and Shibushi, offers a subtropical climate and highly nutritious soil thanks to a large mineral supply of sedimentary rock and ash from the Sakurajima volcano – simply ideal conditions for growing tea. Almost on par with Shizuoka in terms of tea production volumes in Japan, Kagoshima is also known to have the most organic tea farms.
Kyoto Tea
Kyoto, especially the city of Uji, is considered the cultural centre of Japan, symbolically represented by the numerous temples and shrines in the time-honoured city. Japanese tea culture itself also has its roots here, and with it some of the most important processing methods. For example, the special steaming, rolling and drying of green gyokuro were also tested here. Teas from Kyoto and especially from Uji are among the most precious that the world of Japanese tea has to offer. Discover our curated selection of fine Kyoto teas from certified organic farms and traditional farms that span generations.
Miyazaki Tea
Miyazaki's landscape boasts beautiful mountains, gorgeous coastal scenery and a warm climate. It is the prefecture with the most sunny days, and so the power of the sun can also be found in the teas from our Miyazaki Sabō tea farm. Mr. Miyazaki specialises in the best and purest Kamairicha, disregards all forms of chemical pesticides and loves to create interesting and varied aroma blends with his teas. He is also famous for his outstanding Sannenbancha, whose three-year-grown tea plants are full of nutrient-rich energy. Miyazaki's great interest is not only in tea cultivation but also in botany and floriculture, a fact that is unmistakably evident in his very floral-aromatic teas.
Saga Tea
Saga Prefecture is particularly known for its Tamaryokucha and Kamairicha, most of which are grown on Kyūshū Island. We source the highest Tamaryokucha and Kamairicha qualities from the town of Ureshino from the multi-award winning tea farmer Shigeki Ota. Mr. Ota has always been interested in southern tea cultivars, and as a convinced organic tea farmer, he does not use any chemicals for their cultivation and processing. Despite their strong character, his teas manage to present themselves in an incredibly balanced way and convince with an extremely natural aroma.
Shibushi Tea
The top region of Shibushi in Kagoshima Prefecture benefits from the nutrient-rich volcanic soil and its excellent water permeability, which allows the tea plants to grow particularly strongly. In terms of taste, they deliver a strong, natural aroma, which is particularly pronounced in shaded teas such as gyokuro and matcha with a pleasant umami.
Shizuoka Tea
Shizuoka Prefecture produces the majority of teas in Japan and is famous for the high qualities of its top region, Honyama. Due to the large selection of organic teas from Shizuoka, we only source teas of the highest qualities with unique character that meet our high standards. We are also particularly proud of our cooperation with the pioneer of organic tea in Japan, Toshiaki Kinezuka, who has been growing his tea in complete harmony with and for nature since 1976.
Uji Tea
Uji tea is known by aficionados for their traditional growing and processing methods, creating teas that retain as much as all of the natural flavour of the fresh tea plant. Our Uji teas range from fresh sencha, creamy matchas, umami-rich gyokuros and tenchas to pleasantly roasted hojichas.
Ureshino Tea
We source the highest Tamaryokucha and Kamairicha qualities from the city of Ureshino from the multi-award-winning tea farmer Shigeki Ota. His teas manage to present themselves incredibly balanced despite their strong character and convince with an extremely natural aroma.
Yame Tea
Yame produces some of the best teas in Japan and is especially known and loved for the terrific gyokuro quality. Our portfolio also offers a wide variety of other varieties such as sencha, wakocha, matcha, karigane and bancha in all the highest quality and flavour finesse.
