Genmaicha

Genmaicha is a mild, low-caffeine Japanese green tea blended with roasted brown rice. Bancha is most commonly used as the green tea base for Genmaicha, while premium qualities may use high-grade Sencha. The rice is first roasted, then popped, and finally blended with the tea, giving it a pleasantly savoury, malty flavour. The roasted rice lends Genmaicha a warming, gentle quality, making it particularly well suited as an accompaniment to meals and for colder days.

Yoshien Labortests

Laboratory Tests

We go to great lengths to identify the finest organic tea farms across the world’s most celebrated terroirs. All our teas are sourced directly from the farmer and, with a few exceptions, are certified organic or come from pesticide-free farms. Each batch of tea for every harvest is tested for pesticides and other pollutants in an independent German lab to ensure they meet our strict quality standards as well as HACCP food safety requirements. Likewise, all the regions of Japan from which we source our teas are tested for radioactivity for every harvest.

Cultivation & Processing

Special features in location, cultivation and processing

The tea field is perched high in the Honyama growing area above the famous Shizuoka River, surrounded and protected by dense forests. Its southern exposure and steep terrain ensure excellent sun exposure, while the elevated location and frequent morning and evening mists create an ideal microclimate that enhances the quality of the tea.

For this Genmaicha, leaves from the first Sencha harvest are combined with an exceptional organic Matcha from Nishio, traditionally stone-milled. A true rarity.

Single Origin

This tea comes 100% from the above-mentioned tea field in Honyama, sourced directly from the tea processor next to the tea farm.

Preparation

Brewing Guide

2 heaped tsp per 200-300ml water, 55-60°C. Steep for 2 minutes. Suitable for several infusions.

Packaging

Packed in a high-quality, airtight, resealable standing zipper pouch with 9 protective layers to preserve flavour and protect against oxidation and contamination.

Recommended Tea Pot

The ideal teapot for this tea is a purple clay Banko Kyusu with a fine ceramic strainer, which can best bring out the taste of the fine amino acids. Alternatively, a black Tokoname Kyusu can be used, which serves as a suitable all-rounder for green teas.

Recommended Tea Caddy

Ideal is a high-quality tea caddy made of cherry bark (solid wood, Kabazaiku Chazutsu). As a more affordable alternative, we recommend an internally coated, airtight tea caddy.

Test results

We find it very important that our teas are pure and produced in a way that respects the environment. For this reason, each one of our teas is tested for pesticide residues by an independent laboratory, the results of which can be found here. Some of our teas are also tested for specific nutritional compounds, in which case the test results are also published here.
