GABA

GABA tea is a functional tea developed in Japan which has high levels of the amino acid GABA due to its special processing. GABA is the most important inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system and is involved in significant processes in the body, especially in the reduction of nerve irritation, stress management, mood, growth hormones (muscle formation), fat loss and the regulation of blood pressure. In addition, GABA tea also contains all of the other important ingredients of regular green tea, such as catechins, in similar amounts. GABA teas are appreciated by connoisseurs for their buttery, smooth taste.

Laboratory Tests

We go to great lengths to identify the finest organic tea farms across the world’s most celebrated terroirs. All our teas are sourced directly from the farmer and, with a few exceptions, are certified organic or come from pesticide-free farms. Each batch of tea for every harvest is tested for pesticides and other pollutants in an independent German lab to ensure they meet our strict quality standards as well as HACCP food safety requirements. Likewise, the regions of Japan from which we source our teas are tested for radioactivity for every harvest.

GABA Content

The tea farmer uses a special selection of leaves and a specific processing method to ensure that a high GABA content is achieved.

GABA, an important amino acid

The natural amino acid GABA (γ-aminobutyric acid) is an important non-proteinogenic, endogenous amino acid.

GABA is found in varying amounts in certain foods and is also formed in the brain from glutamine. It is particularly abundant in: specially-grown GABA green tea (up to 400mg/100g), tomatoes (up to around 60mg), sprouted rice, certain fermented foods, potatoes (16-60mg), citrus fruits (10-23mg).

Cultivation & Processing

Special features in location, cultivation and processing

This tea thrives in the foothills of Mt. Fuji, which offers ideal climatic conditions for tea cultivation. Thanks to its proximity to the mighty mountains of the Japanese Alps, the region is blessed with an abundance of crystal-clear, cool mountain spring water that flows down the vast slopes into the Pacific Ocean. The area also enjoys a healthy amount of rainfall and sunshine, providing optimum conditions for cultivating hardy, aromatic tea plants.

Single Origin

This tea comes 100% from the above-mentioned tea field in Fujinomiya.

Preparation

Brewing Guide

Dosage: 3 heaped tsp. per 200-300ml of water
Water temperature: 70°C

Mild, relaxing brew: infusion time 30-60 seconds
Strong, stimulating brew: infusion time 2 minutes

Packaging

Packed in a high-quality, airtight, BPA-free resealable zipper pouch to preserve flavour and prevent oxidation. After opening, press out as much air as possible when snapping shut. Alternatively place tea leaves in a stylish tea caddy.

Recommended Teapot

For GABA tea we recommend a Banko Kyusu made of purple clay with fine ceramic sieve, which emphasises the umami notes and makes the tea significantly less bitter. Alternatively, you can use a Black Tokoname Kyusu, which produces a more neutral flavour (an all-rounder for all types of green tea).

Test results

We find it very important that our teas are pure and produced in a way that respects the environment. For this reason, each one of our teas is tested for pesticide residues by an independent laboratory, the results of which can be found here. Some of our teas are also tested for specific nutritional compounds, in which case the test results are also published here.
