Tea Farm

The plants are first cultivated from seeds in the farm's nursery and, after a year, are transplanted to Alpine meadows at an altitude of 1800 metres. The well-draining, calcareous, and relatively nutrient-poor soils of the slopes, combined with ample sunlight and mountain winds, create the ideal conditions for the plants to thrive. Harvesting is done by hand, and the stems and blossoms are carefully collected in the early morning before dew can settle. They are then gently dried in specially designed facilities located directly on-site, ensuring the highest preservation of their delicate qualities.

Character & Aroma

Tasting Notes

Edelweiss tea not only resembles white tea in appearance but also shares a similarly delicate character. The fine hairs (trichomes) on the plant give this herb its uniquely aromatic profile, featuring a mildly spiced character with subtle woody notes and a herbaceous finish. It also has a touch of vegetal nuance reminiscent of edamame and root vegetables.

Leaf

Silvery white, velvety-furred flowers, leaves and stems

Cup

Very light-coloured, clear with a tinge of silvery yellow

EDELWEISS

Edelweiss (Leontopodium nivale) grows around 20 centimetres high on average and is known for its white-silvery bracts, which surround the actual flower in a star-shaped formation. Throughout the centuries, it has spread from the steppe regions of the Himalayas to the Alps. Remarkably, the cultivar of edelweiss has changed only minimally, if at all, and therefore requires very specific environmental conditions to thrive. It requires a minimum altitude of 1000 metres above sea level, because only with such levels of UV radiation can the necessary concentration of antioxidants grow in the plants. Edelweiss is highly protected by conservation laws and has not been allowed to be collected in the wild since the 19th century. According to one of the legends of edelweiss, this flower was born from the tears of a heartbroken ice maiden. Betrayed by her unfaithful lover, she sought her end in a glacier crevasse and her tears fell like stars onto the edge of the Alpine cliffs, growing as edelweiss ever since.

Laboratory Tests

We go to great lengths to identify the finest organic tea farms across the world’s most celebrated terroirs. All our teas are sourced directly from the farmer and, with a few exceptions, are certified organic or come from pesticide-free farms. Each batch of tea for every harvest is tested for pesticides and other pollutants in an independent German lab to ensure they meet our strict quality standards as well as HACCP food safety requirements.

Cultivation & Processing

Special features in location, cultivation and processing

The steep slopes in the Vinschgau Valley have calcareous and silica-rich, nutrient-poor soils, with limited water availability. This climate results in a reduced growth and yield of the edelweiss, but it significantly enhances its quality. A constant north wind and extensive sun keep the plants dry. During the short vegetation period of the Alpine summer, the flowers develop a more intense colour and become richer in nutrients.

Single Origin

These flowers come 100% from the South Tyrol, sourced directly from the tea farm.

Preparation

Brewing Guide

2-3 Flowers, 100°C water, 250ml, steep for 3-5 minutes

Packaging

Packed in a high-quality, airtight, BPA-free resealable zipper pouch to preserve flavour and prevent oxidation. After opening, press out as much air as possible when snapping shut. Alternatively place tea leaves in a stylish tea caddy.

Recommended Tea Pot

A classic teapot made of glass or porcelain is ideal. For enthusiasts of traditional Chinese tea preparation, a Gaiwan can also be used for this Edelweiss tea, allowing you to enjoy its flavour in small, rich servings.

Test results

We find it very important that our teas are pure and produced in a way that respects the environment. For this reason, each one of our teas is tested for pesticide residues by an independent laboratory, the results of which can be found here. Some of our teas are also tested for specific nutritional compounds, in which case the test results are also published here.
