Tea Farm

The tea farm is located in the Lincang Highlands, north of Pu Erh City in Yunnan. It has been certified organic since 2011 and cultivates tea plants within an intact ecosystem consisting of over 160 000 trees. Since 2018, the tea farm has been recognised as a "Provincial Key Leading Enterprise in Agricultural Industrialisation Management of Yunnan Province".

Flavour

This premium quality Dianhong black tea ("Dian" is an old name for Yunnan) is visually appealing with large dark brown and golden leaves rolled into loose spirals. The cup is bright orange while the flavour of the tea itself is quite malty and straightforward with a fine bitterness. The addition of pure organic bergamot oil from lends the tea a superbly fresh and citrusy aroma making for an exceptionally elegant Earl Grey.

Probably the most popular flavoured black tea, Earl Grey owes its characteristic aroma to bergamot: a type of fragrant, sour orange. Earl Grey is named after Charles Grey (1764-1845), a former British Prime Minister, whose association with the tea, despite various legends, remains a mystery. Chinese black teas were traditionally used for the base and nowadays may also be found as a white or green tea. Free from artificial flavours and fragrances, all Yoshi en Earl Grey teas are blended with the finest organic, cold-pressed bergamot oil from its native terroir in Calabria, Italy.

Laboratory Tests

We go to great lengths to identify the finest organic tea farms across the world’s most celebrated terroirs. All our teas are sourced directly from the farmer and, with a few exceptions, are certified organic or come from pesticide-free farms. Each batch of tea for every harvest is tested for pesticides and other pollutants in an independent German lab to ensure they meet our strict quality standards as well as HACCP food safety requirements.

Cultivation & Processing

The highlands of Yunnan have a mild, subtropical climate even at high altitudes. The slopes are mostly south-facing, and are therefore more heavily influenced by the Indian Ocean and the Pacific.

This tea is grown in southwestern Yunnan at over 1500m in the Lincang region, far from any major cities or industry. The mountainous, wooded area in which the tea garden is embedded is so idyllic that it has been designated a tourist recreation zone. Furthermore, the tea garden was the very first of its kind in China to be accepted as a member of the Rainforest Alliance, which is committed to the sustainable protection of forests and biodiversity. Traditionally, various large-leaf cultivars are grown in Yunnan, some of which go back to very old tea plant and the tea garden itself is home to more than 160 000 trees.

Preparation

Brewing Guide

Steep 5g in 200–300ml water at 90°C for 1–2 minutes. Suitable for several infusions.

Recommended Teapot

We can recommend preparing this tea in smaller quantities in a Gaiwan or a porcelain teapot to bring out the fine bergamot scent. Alternatively steep in a glass teapot and watch the leaves unfurl.

Packaging & Storage

Packed in a high-quality, airtight, resealable standing zipper pouch with nine protective layers to preserve flavour and prevent oxidation. After opening, press out as much air as possible when snapping shut. Alternatively place tea leaves in a stylish tea caddy.

The purity of our formulas is important to us. This is why we have both our raw ingredients as well as our finished products extensively tested by independent laboratories to confirm purity and active ingredient content.
