Classic Masala Chai

Chai & Ayurvedic Teas

Masala chai is a traditional Indian beverage made from black tea, milk, sugar, and a blend of spices such as cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, and cloves. The term "masala" comes from Hindi and simply means "spice blend". Masala chai refers to a unique combination of spices that give the tea its distinctive flavour. The origins of chai date back centuries when spices were used in Ayurvedic medicine to promote health and well-being. It was only during British colonial rule in the 19th century, with the rise of tea cultivation in India, that black tea became a key ingredient in the drink. In its countries of origin, such as India and Pakistan, masala chai is a symbol of hospitality, community, and culture. Whether served in street markets, tea houses, or homes, it remains an essential part of daily life.

Yoshien Labortests

Laboratory Tests

We go to great lengths to identify the finest organic tea farms across the world’s most celebrated terroirs. All our teas are sourced directly from the farmer and, with a few exceptions, are certified organic or come from pesticide-free farms. Each batch of tea for every harvest is tested for pesticides and other pollutants in an independent German lab to ensure they meet our strict quality standards as well as HACCP food safety requirements.

Preparation

Brewing Guide

Classic Chai:
Bring 2 teaspoons of chai to the boil in approximately 250ml of (plant-based) milk and let it simmer on low for 10 minutes. Sweeten lightly to taste.

Pure Tea Preparation:
Pour 250ml of boiling water (100°C) over 2 teaspoons of chai and let it steep for 3-5 minutes.

Packaging & Storage

Packed in a high-quality, airtight, BPA-free resealable zipper pouch to preserve flavour and prevent oxidation. After opening, press out as much air as possible when snapping shut. Alternatively, and especially for long-term storage, we recommend our airtight tea caddies.

Recommended Tea Pot

For preparation as a classic chai, the tea should be made in a saucepan on the stove. For a tea infusion with hot water, we recommend a porcelain teapot, which retains the temperature well.

Test results

We find it very important that our teas are pure and produced in a way that respects the environment. For this reason, each one of our teas is tested for pesticide residues by an independent laboratory, the results of which can be found here. Some of our teas are also tested for specific nutritional compounds, in which case the test results are also published here.
