Yamaai Green 山藍
The yamaai is a plant from the Mercurialis genus, which is distributed mainly across East and Southeast Asia. In Japan, textile dyes have traditionally been obtained from the plant, and it is particularly famous for suri-ai 刷り藍 (literally: rubbed blue) dyes. Historically, kimonos were dyed a greenish blue colour by rubbing the leaves or the sap of the plant into the fabric. The plant's insect-repellent and skin-soothing effects made its dye particularly popular with tea farmers.
