Amazonian Tea

Catuaba

The catuaba tree (Anemopaegma myrandum) grows in the Amazon and is a member of the coca family (Erythroxylaceae). This tea, which is made from the inner bark of the tree, has a long history in the rainforests of Middle and South America. The indigenous Brazilian Tupi people have immortalised the "loving" character of the catuaba in countless songs.

Rich in Minerals and Trace Elements

The bark of the catuaba tree is rich in minerals and trace elements. Our premium catuaba tea thus contains valuable nutrients such as magnesium, potassium, calcium, as well as many trace elements which are all important for biochemical bodily processes.

Laboratory Tests

We go to great lengths to identify the finest organic tea farms across the world’s most celebrated terroirs. All our teas are sourced directly from the farmer and, with a few exceptions, are certified organic or come from pesticide-free farms. Each batch of tea for every harvest is tested for pesticides and other pollutants in an independent German lab to ensure they meet our strict quality standards as well as HACCP food safety requirements.

Cultivation & Processing

Our premium catuaba bark tea is sourced from wild-grown catuaba which has been sustainably harvested in the Brazilian Amazon according to traditional harvesting methods.

In order to ensure the long-term preservation of the trees, only small amounts of the bark are harvested from each tree. This allows the rainforests to be used in an ecologically sustainable way, avoiding exploitation and destruction.

The inner bark is removed from the outer bark and placed in a small wind tunnel that blows away leaves, dust and earth. The bark is then ready to be chipped and packaged. This natural processing method ensures that the catuaba tea is pesticide-free, environmentally friendly, and retains optimal raw quality.

Preparation

Brewing Guide

For an aromatic flavour: 1 heaped tbsp bark tea per 500ml boiling water in a pot; allow to simmer for 5 minutes. Tea should then steep for 15 minutes. Sweeten to taste (traditionally with honey).

Note: A splash of lemon juice while simmering can refine the flavour and help draw out the minerals. Amazon bark teas are very rich, and individuals with sensitivity should begin with small quantities of tea.

Packaging

High quality, airtight, resealable standing zipper pouch to preserve flavour and protect against oxidation and contamination.

Recommended Teapot

Ideally a large glass or porcelain teapot with a tea strainer.

Recommended Storage

Ideally store in a quality tea caddy made from cherry tree bark (wooden, kabazaiku chazutsu) or an airtight, double-coated metal tin.

Test results

We find it very important that our teas are pure and produced in a way that respects the environment. For this reason, each one of our teas is tested for pesticide residues by an independent laboratory, the results of which can be found here. Some of our teas are also tested for specific nutritional compounds, in which case the test results are also published here.
