Special features in location, cultivation and processing
The highlands of Yunnan and Lincang have a generally mild, subtropical climate that extends even to higher altitudes. However, nighttime temperatures can fluctuate significantly, creating a stimulating climate perfect for tea cultivation.
This tea originates from southwestern Yunnan in Lincang province, at an altitude of over 1600 metres. The remote tea farm is far from industrial areas and major transport routes, nestled in a picturesque, forest-rich landscape so idyllic that it has become a traveller destination. This tea farm was also the first in China to become a member of the Rainforest Alliance – a pioneering step towards the protection of forests and biodiversity.
The Yunnan region is renowned for its large-leaf cultivars, some of which come from ancient tea plants. The tea garden itself is home to over 160,000 tea trees, underscoring its remarkable traditional and scale.
For this tea, only the youngest buds and top two leaves are harvested. The buds are initially gently withered indoors before being traditionally sun-dried. After this, the leaves are prepared for pressing into tea bars: they are portioned (100g), steamed with hot air, carefully softened, and machine-pressed into their characteristic shape. Finally, the tea bars undergo a multi-day drying phase before being packaged. This particular batch was pressed in 2019.
